A.C.U.B.S.S. 2006 Annual Fall Conference
The 2005 conference was awesome; the members present were treated to an event to be remembered. Everyone had a great time.
The conference opened with conference host Dawn Dettlaff welcoming everyone in attendance.
Dawn introduced Dr. Petra Roter, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, who gave a rousing welcome address.
Cynthia Eghbalnia, Environmental Health & Safety Manager – Madison Area Technical College opened the education portion of the conference with, On-Line Safety Training: Why & How to Get It Started. She gave us insights into the pros and cons of classroom vs. on-line training. We worked in small groups developing our pros and cons. She gave us a supervisory Health and Safety Survey we can use at our respective institutions, and a number of training websites. We had a wonderful lunch at The Fox River Room, at the Universities River Center. After lunch we had the pleasure of having Terry Guilmire, Facilities Administrator – Madison Area Technical College, speak to us on Competitive Bidding 101. Some things discussed were:
* What the statues don’t say
* Key components of a bid
* Things to stay away from
* Types of bids
* Minority Vendor’s Preference
* Intergovernmental Procurements
This was a very informative session. We were even given sample bids that were used to obtain snow removal bids, parking lot remolding, and painting services. There were also bids for miscellaneous custodial equipment.
There were vendors set up, and we had ample time to talk with them and view their offerings.
Ted Balser, Senior Partner of Career Services came to us with….. Leadership and Attitude..or..The Parable of the Geese in Formation. We got to color a cartoon of 2 preteen kids with the
caption:
“As I see it, adults are just big kids who’ve lost their sense of humor”
This session was fun as well as informative. Ted’s style was upbeat and humorous. We learned why geese fly in formation and heard some sayings to ponder, like:
* A day without sunshine is like…well….night.
* A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.
* On the other hand, you have different fingers
He talked about changing factors in the world of work, Changing factors in the world of learning, Servant Leadership, and Diversity.
The first day ended with Dinner at a local pizza place, and a visit to the Sleepy Hollow Woods for a tour and Bonfire.The next morning we had breakfast in the Blackhawk Commons, after which we heard Marc Nylen, Director of Gruenhagan Conference Center, who spoke on: Budgeting for Student Employment. Marc gave a thorough presentation on the topic. We received a notebook full of information relative to budgeting and acquiring student employees.
